Austria Citizenship By Investment Program

Austria is a nation that for centuries guarded its citizenship jealously, and until very recently, the only way that a foreigner could become an Austrian citizen was to take up continuous residency in the country for ten years.

About five years ago the Austrian governments announced its Citizenship By Investment (CBI) program, enabling high net-worth individuals who were non-EU the chance to bypass Austria’s  prior lengthy residence requirement, and instead be able to gain Austrian citizenship by virtue of making a significant financial contribution to the Austrian economy by virtue of a real estate purchase.

What Does Austria Want From An Investor?

In order to qualify for the Austrian citizenship via its CBI program, an applicant must also meet one of the following investment requirements:

  • To make a non-refundable real estate purchase to the value of €250,000 for a piece of real estate situated within Austria’s borders to the Austrian
  • The applicant must maintain ownership of the purchased real estate for a duration of five years minimum
  • The applicant understands that the Austrian citizenship process will take as much as 120 working days before completion

Once the citizenship process is completed by the relevant department within the Austrian government, full Austrian citizenship and passport is granted immediately and without a period of residency.  The application extends to family members such as a spouse and children up to 18 years of age.

Benefits Of The Austrian Citizenship By Investment Program

The Austrian Citizenship by Investment program may be a little more expensive and take a little longer than some of the other programs we deal with, but if an applicant is prepared to invest €250,000 in some prime Central European real estate and wait 120 days for the citizenship process to run its course, they will become proud citizens and passport holders to one of the oldest and most respected nations within the European Union.

It is worth knowing that every minister in the Austrian government must individually and personally sign off on an application for citizenship. That makes an Austrian passport gained by second citizenship a powerful statement on the outstanding character of the applicant.

Here are just some of the Austrian CBI program’s benefits:

  • Value – While not the cheapest Citizenship by Investment program on our roster by any means, at €250,000 still represents excellent value for money. It is also worth remembering that aside from citizenship and a passport, an applicant is also the owner of Austrian real estate that will only increase in value significantly over five years of ownership
  • Passport Power – The Austrian passport grants its holder visa-free access to 187 countries worldwide which makes it the fifth strongest passport in the world
  • Credibility – Few Citizenship By Investment programs come close to providing an investor with the sheer credibility that citizenship to a country of the standing of Austria delivers
  • Healthcare and Education – as an Austrian citizen you and your family will be privy to some of the very best standard of education and healthcare available anywhere in Europe
  • Unlimited Access to the EU – Austria is a highly respected EU member state, and as an Austrian citizen you will be free to live and work without restriction in any European Union country you choose

About Austria

The Republic of Austria is a mountainous, landlocked (no coastline) country located in central Europe. Austria borders Germany, Italy, Switzerland, Hungary, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Slovenia and Liechtenstein, and is historically one of the great cultural centers of Europe. Austria is one of the oldest established nations in the western world, with a history that can be traced all the way back to 996 AD, and has been a highly respected and influential nation for centuries, a position it maintains to this day.

While the rest of Europe reels from one financial crisis to another, the Austrian economy is consistently rock-solid. Despite a population of less than 9 million, Austria consistently ranks among the top 15 richest countries in the world. Austria has an extremely high standard of living and also scores well for healthcare and education.

Austria has long benefited from being the major trading partner of Germany, one of the world’s top-three economies. As a result of this relationship, Austria’s own economy has grown even stronger over the decades, and even more so since it joined the European Union in 1995.

Austria’s primary sources of wealth are agriculture and industry. However, Austria is also an extremely popular tourist destination, with 21 million international tourist arrivals each year which makes it the 12th most visited country. The vast majority of these are winter holiday makers looking to enjoy Austria’s legendary snowy mountains which make for excellent skiing.
